Four highly decorated American soldiers became prisoners of war in their own country. Meet U.S. Army Veteran Paul Slough.  

Paul Slough is a decorated Army Veteran and a resident of Denton County. He served 4 years in the army and national guard and deployed to Bosnia and Iraq. Paul and 3 other veterans were no strangers to combat. They made a split-second decision in an Iraqi war zone during an emergency which led to 13 year of political persecution and wrongful imprisonment. Hear Paul and his wife Christin share about the Blackwater Massacre.

As of December 2020 Michael Scarpello is the Dallas County Elections Administrator. Mr. Scarpello has 20 years of experience in elections services and management, having previously served in Nebraska as the Chief Deputy Election Commissioner & Elections Manager from 2000 to 2007, in Colorado as the Director of Elections from 2007 to 2011, in California as the Registrar of Voters from 2011 to 2018, and most recently in Arizona as the Vice President of Election Management Systems.

Mr. Scarpello holds a Juris Doctor from the University Of Nebraska College Of Law and bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Mr. Scarpello has been a member of the Nebraska State Bar Commission where he was Bar Certified and National Association of Election Officials certified as an Elections Administrator.

But Ronda Kay’s greatest passion is her work as a prolife activist. She was the 2010 Catholic Pro Life Committee award recipient for Public Witness where she received the nickname “Hurricane for Life” by former Executive Director, Karen Garnett. Ronda Kay has successfully managed campaigns for prolife candidates and she attributes her unique career path to trusting in God’s plan through blind faith and living their family motto “Serve God, Through Serving Others. Kyleen Wright, President of Texans for Life Coalition (TLC) will speak at the Coppell Republican Women's meeting on Thursday, February 11. Kyleen has been a pro-life activist since 1975, when she first learned about abortion in high school. She has served in many roles in the pro-life movement, and has been the president of Texans for Life Coalition for 20 years. She and Texans for Life have been instrumental in the passage of numerous life-saving bills in Texas, most notably, the Sonogram law and HB 2. The House gavel from the sonogram debate and the Governor’s signing pen are on display in their office. Kyleen is a lifelong Republican, the mother of four exceptional men, an outstanding daughter-in-law, and more recently, she welcomed her first grandchild, the fierce and beautiful, Eleanor.

The 5th Annual Wreaths Across America (WAA) in Coppell will be held in 2020, and this year’s celebration is scheduled for the Rolling Oaks Memorial Cemetery, at 400 Freeport Parkway, on Saturday, December 19, beginning at 11:00am sharp.  Wreaths Across America is a national program held at over 1000 sites and honors almost 1,000,000 service people who have given their lives in service to our country.

WAA is also committed to teaching younger generations about the value of their freedoms, and the importance of honoring those who sacrificed so much to protect those freedoms.  Their motto is REMEMBER, HONOR, and TEACH.

All citizens are welcome to attend the local ceremony and invited to help place wreaths that day.  The City of Coppell Honor Guard will be on-site to present the colors, Taps will be played, and the ceremony will follow the same format as has been used since our first local recognition in 2016.

The cemetery currently has 83 veterans buried on its grounds.  In past years, we have had such generosity of Coppell citizens to purchase wreaths for the site.  Any overages are automatically sent to Dallas National Cemetery, as they struggle to fill to capacity. This year, we are at a tremendous deficit of wreaths, and are looking for help in purchasing those.  We currently only have 25 wreath orders and we’d love any help in filling those additional 55 wreaths so that all our veterans are remembered.  Wreaths are $15 each.

There are 2 ways to purchase wreaths (and need to be ordered by November 30!):

Online, by going to www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/TX0402.  That is the Coppell group website, and the easiest way to donate.  The other way is by filling out an order form from the website and mailing a check to: Wreaths Across America, PO Box 249, Columbia Falls, ME, 04623.

The Coppell Republican Women will hold its first evening meeting of 2020 at the William T. Cozby Library in Coppell on February 6, 2020, featuring guest speakers Edward Retta and Maria Garcia of the Hispanic Republican Club of North Texas (HRCNT). A social time will begin at 6:30 pm, followed by their regular meeting and speakers at 7:00 pm.

Last month, CNN profiled Border Hispanics for Trump – a pro-Trump group of Hispanics near El Paso, Texas. Their leader, Ray Baca, told CNN reporter Nick Valencia that President Trump is the one “who most closely represents my values,” despite Valencia’s repeated anti-Trump comments made during the interview. Republicans and Hispanics share many of the same values, such as being pro-family, pro-faith and pro-life.

Recognizing a need to encourage Latino political participation, Garcia founded the HRCNT, which provides education, monthly speaker presentations, and the camaraderie necessary to encourage Latinos to engage in public service. Born in Queretaro, Mexico, Maria migrated to the United States with her family when she was nine years old. Since moving to North Texas, she has been lauded as an outstanding volunteer, fundraiser, mentor and servant leader who has been successful in expanding the Hispanic presence in the Republican Party.

Edward Retta, Principal of Cross Culture Communications and Co-founder of Latino Cultural Center Dallas acts as Advisor to HRCNT. Retta has a lifetime of international experience, a bi- cultural childhood and a professional education to help people work with others from different cultures. First a graduate of Texas A&M University, he is also an Honors Graduate in Cross Cultural Ministry from Dallas Theological Seminary, with thesis research completed at Oxford University in England. He also completed the International Leadership School in Wales, UK. Retta has delivered cross cultural solutions in over 50 countries, and conducted training for leading global companies, for NASA and for the US Air Force, Air War College.

Please join us for our May meeting on Thursday, May 2.  Our guest speaker will be Pamela Whitehead, Projects Manager for the non-profit organization And Then There Were None.  

And Then There Were None (ATTWN) was founded by Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood Clinic Director turned anti-abortion advocate whose story was made into the newly-released $6MM movie, “Unplanned.” ATTWN is a registered nonprofit organization that exists to help abortion clinic workers leave the abortion industry. They are pro-life without exceptions. While they believe in and wholeheartedly support all peaceful pro-life efforts, ATTWN seeks to end abortion from the inside out.

Pamela Whitehead, Projects Manager, is a US Army veteran who worked as a medic and lab tech for 20 years. She is married and has three children, one of which she placed for adoption. Pamela’s deepest desire is that all human life would be seen as valuable and that abortion would become unthinkable because women would be wrapped in love and resources. Her living testimony proves that women can both parent and prosper!

First Liberty LogoPlease join us as we welcome our guest speaker for the month of April, Keisha Russell.  Russell is an Associate Counsel with First Liberty Institute, concentrating on religious liberty matters and First Amendment rights. 

Russell attended Emory University School of Law, where she was heavily involved in Emory’s prestigious Center for the Study of Law and Religion. She served on the Emory Journal of Law & Religion and two moot court teams. She was a law clerk for the Center’s Restoring Religious Freedom Project where she worked on religious liberty litigation. In her final year of law school, Russell worked as a law clerk for the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) on national and international matters affecting Israel.

Russell was also selected for a legal clinic with the Emory Barton Child Law and Policy Center. She trained with a political expert and advocated for children at the Georgia state capitol. Russell was selected by Emory University as a Graduating Woman of Excellence.

Prior to joining First Liberty, Russell earned a Bachelor’s in Communications from University of Central Florida and a Master’s in Teaching from the University of Southern California. She was a 2011 Teach For America corps member and taught elementary special education in Atlanta. Russell is most passionate about protecting religious freedom for children in America’s schools.

Texas relies on the State Board of Education (SBOE) to make crucial decisions affecting public school curriculum. Come learn about the recent issues they've faced, and recommendations for the future. The State of Education Address will be presented by our State Board of Education Representative, Patricia Hardy.

Patricia “Pat” Hardy represents District 11 on the SBOE.  She has served on all three of the board’s committees. She currently serves on the board’s Committee on School Finance/Permanent School Fund, which oversees the Permanent School Fund, the nation’s largest education endowment. During her tenure on the board, Hardy at various times has served as vice chair and chair of this committee.

The State of Education is sponsored by Coppell Republican Women at their March meeting.  Social time will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the meeting starting at 7 p.m.  at the Coppell Chamber of Commerce, 708 Main Street, Coppell.  The public is invited to attend.

 Coppell City Councilman Wes Mays will be speaking about Coppell’s city tax rate, the school district tax rate, recapture, and the impact that pending state legislation could have on all of our tax burden at the next meeting of the Coppell Republican Women. Join us on Thursday, February 7, to learn important information from Wes’ deep knowledge base and his experience in city government. Social time will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the meeting starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Cozby Library & Community Commons.

Wes serves on the Coppell City Council, Place 3. He participated in Coppell’s Citizen Summit in 2011 and has served as the president of the Arbor Manors Homeowners Association and the Westbury Manor Homeowner Association. He is a graduate of Leadership North Texas. He currently serves as the city liaison to Coppell ISD and the North Central Council of Governments and formerly served as city liaison to the Carrollton/Farmers Branch ISD/Lewisville ISD and the Metrocrest Community Clinic.
